When it comes to federal business taxes, your goal should be to pay only what is owed, nothing more. Because your tax liability is calculated by your net income, the surest way to lower the taxes you owe is to minimize your income. Of course, you need to do this without technically reducing your income. You can do this by taking appropriate above-the-line tax deductions.

Above-the-line-tax deductions are basically like tax breaks that are adjustments to your income. They’re identified as above-the-line because they are reduced on the first page of the tax return just above the last line. These deductions limit your adjustable gross income and ultimately decrease your tax liability.

The list below are a few above-the-line tax deductions that are discussed in our Internet Tax Guide which you can take if you are eligible.

• Moving expenses, if you relocated for professional purposes.

• Self-employment. Half the total of taxes that are paid to Social Security and Medicare.

• Self-employed retirement plans.

• Self-employed health insurance. The total amount you pay in health insurance premiums not only for yourself, but for your spouse and dependents as well. Even contributions towards long-term care policies are deductible.

• Penalties paid for early withdrawal of savings. The account manager of such an account should send you a 1099-INT or 1099-OID form including the early withdrawal penalty.

• Alimony payments. If you became divorced and funding alimony, you can deduct these payments from your income. You must provide your ex-spouse’s social security number; or the deduction might be disallowed.

• IRA deductions for amounts contributed to traditional IRAs for people who are self-employed.

• Student loan interest. Up to $2,500 in student loan interest paid can be deducted for single filers making $65,000 or less or joint filers making $135,000 or less.

• Jury duty pay if it was turned over to your employer.

You can get most of these above-the-line tax deductions by using the long form, 1040. If you prefer to use the short from, 1040A, you may still utilize some of these deductions. Early account withdrawal penalties, IRA contributions, student loan interest and jury pay are a few of the above-the-line-tax deductions that may be claimed on the 1040A tax return. Medicare also only pays for skilled care, and patients are normally able to collect for only about 23 of 100 days spent in a nursing home . This leaves Medicaid, to pay for 40% of the national aveage of long-term care annually. Medicare pays for skilled care in a nursing home only for the short period during which you are recuperating following a hospital stay (only up to 100 days). Once your care needs stabilize, and you need personal or custodial care, Medicare will not pay these costs according to Paul Contris. The average cost for a person who needs long-term care is $40,000 to $70,000 annually, depending on where you live, plus the cost to the family caregiver who may have to leave their job.

Medicare only pays for 20 days of nursing home care, and only under limited circumstances. As such, only 8 percent of people meet the necessary requirements. Medicare supplements insurance or the major medical health insurance provided by most employers however. Nationally, individuals and families pay one-third of all nursing home expenses out-of-pocket and about half are paid by state Medicaid programs. Medicare supplement insurance and health insurance you may have at work usually will not pay for long-term care. Minnesota Long-term care insurance will pay for some or all of your long-term care.

Medicare, which provides health coverage for all Americans over the age of 65, pays a share of the ‘capitated’ annual fee per member for elder care in Minnesota. Medicaid pays the remainder for those who qualify on grounds of low income. Medicare only pays about 5% of long term care costs, with the other 95% paid either privately or by Medicaid (the health program for America’s needy). Long Term Care Insurance is designed to help Americans plan for their future long term care needs.

Buy a home that comings with Vendor Finance terms is a great way to buy a home. This method of buying and selling property has been around for many years. In fact, it became very popular after the second world war due to credit shortages. Most people who were interested in buying a home could not get bank finance, so most property owners were forced to consider vendor finance as an alternative way to sell. It really helped the sellers who needed to make a move elsewhere, because they had a committed purchaser who was prepared to make regular payments to the owner. The buyers were really happy, because it gave them the opportunity to buy a home without needing a bank.

When you compare vendor finance with traditional bank finance, it can really have great advantages for the buyer, because they are not required to jump through lots of hoops with a bank. In most cases, the vendor only wants to see that the buy can actually make the regular payments and only need to see some form of proof of income from the buyer. If the buyer works on a contract basis it will normally be a simply matter of showing bank statements, paid invoices or any signed contracts with the rate of payments being received. If credit is hard to obtain many credit reporting agencies will not evening be in a position to provide credit scores for you personally. When this happens, it forces both the vendor and buyer to trust each other based on personality and personal relationships.

Some of the best features of vendor financing for the buyer is that the owner of the property for sale does not have any loan attached to the title of the home. This is so important for the buyer, because it means you have very little to be concerned about as far as a bank coming in and foreclosing on the home, because they will not have any security over the property. Some country even have vendor finance associations setup but we have found these to be more like investor clubs instead of associations. In today’s economic troubled times, vendor financing will become much more popular in one way shape of form.

For the last fifteen years, we have seen vendor financing becoming more popular for purchasers who do not have any savings to satisfy the bank who are offering home loans to people with good credit ratings. We can see vendor finance working in these situations, where the buyers have enough income to support the new home loan, but lack the deposit, and work with the vendor to offer them vendor finance for their deposit. This solution still works for both the vendor and the purchaser, because they both get what they need - a house sold, and a home purchased.

Terms and payments of vendor finance deposits will be different each time, as no two home purchase will be the same. We have found in lagging economic times, the owner is prepared to offer deposit finance on interest free terms over periods as long as ten years and not requiring any regular payments. However, when economic times are not so tough, it is not uncommon for the vendor to expect to receive regular payments and interest as high as fifteen percent. Either way, if you want to buy your own property or sell a property that is difficult to sell, well make sure you consider the benefits of vendor financing.

One of the most common comments we hear from people who are new to this concept of vendor finance is that it is not normal, but then again, what is normal these days anyway. If buying or selling a home on full or some vendor finance becomes a solution for both the owner and buyer, does it really matter if it’s not considered to be normal? The most important thing for both parties, is that they both get what they want. When this happens, it best described as a win/win deal for the purchaser and seller and that’s all that really counts.

So I haven’t had any time to talk on this weblog nearly as often as I’d planned, on account of how much I have been running around town with my old man fuel his wild & crazy midlife crisis. Well, some would argue it isn’t as far gone as it could be. The thing is, the way he played it out was he dressed up like he was Fonzie or something, and come over to my house and proclaim to me, in his hippest dialect: “Get in, son, you and I are going to be shopping for some classic Mustang sales. You heard that right, buddy, I’m totally set to do this thing.”

And so he & I were hopping around to some of those wild vintage car sales lots that most people are just about convinced the mob owns and operates, and I see this wild old guy cut a check on the spot, for an alarmingly gleaming classic Ford automobile. It’s an intense machine. It had a great sound as well.

I want to point out that I said that last sentence in the past tense. It sounded really nice right up to the point that it stopped making any noises. My Dad tells me that it is just a easy fix and all he needs is the right part. Only thing is, it is not as easy to get your hands on classic Ford Mustang parts as it was like a thousand years ago, but Dad tells me there is a pretty good-sized aftermarket for them to this day. From what I’m told the surest way to get you parts for 1965 Mustangs is by way of web auctions, since you can find them rebuilt and sometimes as good as they were 30 years ago. Not necessarily cheap, however… Come on, man, they are half-century old automotive parts.

I guess it could’ve been worse… Imagine if he would’ve got himself a harley.

If you are like my daughter, you love to spend time each day playing fun games online for free each day.  She has a few favorite sites that have the games she usually plays, but she is always on the look out for websites with new games to play for free.

Since she is 10 years old, she loves dress up games, roller coaster games, hunting games, horse games, animal video games and political games.  She also loves Bratz and sometimes plays a Bratz  makeover game where you get to pick hairstyles, makeup, clothes and more in order to get the doll to look the way she wants.

Many grownups also love free online games, often for when they are taking breaks at work and are sitting at their wired desk.  There are lots of puzzle and non-gambling card games available, as well as racing games and shooter games.  One of my daughter’s favorite sites is a political game site that is fun for grownups too.  One of her favorite games is one where you can beat up your least favorite politico online and get your aggression out without actually hurting anyone.

Some of the best online games, the ones with the most elaborate designs and game play, are not free.  However, many of these sites offer free game samples and free months of game play so you can try out the site before you decide to buy.  My daughter has signed up for a few paid sites over the last few years and really spends the most time on those, so I imagine that they really are the best since she is not as concerned about getting her money’s worth as an adult would be, but rather judges by how much enjoyment she gets.

Hermit crabs are great pets for young and old alike. They once were only souvenirs from the beach, but now they can be bought in any pet store. Hermit crabs are wonderful starter pets for kids. They make a great alternative to the more common Guinea pigs or hamsters. Unlike what you might expect if you have never kept hermit crabs, it is possible to play with them. They have distinct personalities of their own.

You should learn good hermit crab keeping to keep your pet healthy and happy and living a good long life. Here are some hints to get you started.

Before you buy your hermit crab, you need to obtain the necessary equipment and supplies. They will need an aquarium and not those tiny cages you see at the shops by the shore — hermit crabs should have at least a ten-gallon aquarium to move around in. If you are getting more than one crab, you should get a larger aquarium. A pet shop will suggest the best size for the number of crabs you will be keeping. Make sure the aquarium has a tight lid so your crabs don’t escape! Use an appropriate size heater so the tank will maintain the correct temperature.

You will need a substrate for the tank, as well. Three to four inches of sand will be optimal, but you can also use crushed shells or other materials. If you use something other than sand, it is still a good idea to cover a portion of the bottom with sand, so the crabs will have somewhere comfortable to go for molting.

For feeding your hermit crab, you will need to get some commercial hermit crab food. You can also feed small pieces fish occasionally. Also, your crab should have some crushed eggshells or oyster shells to support their calcium levels. It is important to keep their small bones strong and healthy.

There seems to be a bit of a backlash going on against the environmental movement in recent weeks. It seems as the price of our carbon based energy sources increase so people become less and less concerned about sustainability issues and being greener in general.

Even I have changed my viewpoint somewhat. Maybe the earth will take everything in her stride and she will quite happily handle everything we can throw her. Maybe she will not! We have no real way of knowing that.

Even though this might be the case I still think it’s extremely important to consider sustainability in our daily lives. If the technology is available, we should use it. Clean energy is the way forward. Just look at the Beijing Olympics. The smog hanging in the air is truly horrendous.

Let’s face it, the combustion engine is antiquated technology. We don’t actually need to use these dirty devices anymore.

Whilst it seems like an insurmountable task to clean up our dirty environment what it actually comes down to is every single individual on this planet taking charge and taking some responsibility for their actions.

It’s the simple law of cause and effect. Everything we do has a reaction and we would do well to wake up and smell the coffee before too long.
