Tour Idea #2:  Fort Abercrombie, known as the Gateway to the Dakotas, is located in the town of Abercrombie and was the first permanent military fort in North Dakota. This fort helped to guard oxcart trails, stagecoaches, and supply wagons for the military. They even guarded the steamboats that traveled the Red River. For a time, the fort was even a supply base for expeditions that sought gold in North Dakota and Montana.
